It seems that someone is always trying to sell something. I grow weary of it…unless it is something I need. May God strike down MVI if we ever sell something to a hospice that is not needed! HOWEVER, as a leader, whether a CEO, CFO, Clinical Leader or any other asset manager, you are constantly selling ideas. I sell ideas hard if I am convinced the direction is more than marginally beneficial. That’s my job. It’s your job too. In fact, it is the 1st Duty of a leader.

MCOs and ACOs Love the Model!

An interesting trend is occurring with MCOs (Managed Care Organizations) and ACOs (Accountable Care Organizations) and their relationships with hospices. Many are choosing to partner with hospices that do the Model over those that don’t. My jaw has dropped repeatedly since the end of 2012 and throughout this year as I witness hospices using the Model to sell value to strategic partners. This means that many MVI clients are poised well! Yea!

For years Andrew’s Hospice CFO training course has contained the following exam question: “When Medicare cuts hospice rates, what three things will happen?” Hospice visionaries and pioneers are not surprised by cuts to Medicare reimbursements. Are you an outlier? Though this term can carry a negative connotation in the reimbursement and regulatory worlds, here we are viewing it positively. It is an interesting topic to contemplate. Secretly, most individuals seek differentiation and want to be recognized, at least according to Maslow and his Hierarchy of Needs. Or we could cite Frankel in that we all seek meaning and purpose in our lives and would like to accomplish something noble and good.

How Deep is Your Model?

As I look across the hospice landscape as it relates to the “Model”, I believe there are many entities that think they are “doing the Model” when in fact, the implementation is quite shallow. I do not say this in order to make anyone feel bad about their progress (we are ALL making progress!), but rather because I care and feel quite responsible. I also judge MVI’s performance to a large degree on this ideal. I realize that important new discoveries regarding the Model are being recognized and assimilated daily. This innovation makes it exciting, but it also out-dates materials quickly.
