The “hospice cap” refers to the Medicare Hospice Aggregate Cap, a limit set by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) on the total payments a hospice can receive in a year. It is calculated by multiplying the average number of beneficiaries by an annually adjusted per-beneficiary cap amount to prevent overuse and ensure cost-effectiveness. Hospices that exceed this cap must refund the excess payments to Medicare.
