Throughout the years, Andrew and done countless presentations for hospice Boards of Directors and Leadership Staff. He stopped for a number of years, referring other speakers because of the time required for other programs. However over the last year, the requests and apparent need have risen dramatically for this particular program. After all, the BOD makes some of the most strategic decisions regarding the destiny of a hospice and far too many hospices have been wrecked by poor decisions at this level.

The CFO is one of the most important positions in a hospice. The CFO has perhaps the biggest paddle in the hospice canoe regarding direction, with the exception of the CEO. Why? Because the CFO is armed with some of the most persuasive data in the organization, the quantified facts of the business…data! The underlying truth with all businesses is that the economic model MUST work. To be effective, the CFO must accurately quantify the current state of the organization, interpret the situation with predictive insight of the future, formulate strategies, and influence others to execute positive action. The EVIDENCE of an effective CFO is in the numbers! An effective CFO can help a hospice be radically successful. A poor CFO can help a hospice out of business. The purpose of the program is to instill the financial leadership mindset, the technical skills, and the deep knowledge of the numbers to be an effective hospice CFO into individuals that desire to be better at the position. To achieve this end, participants will undergo a sequence of testing, evaluation, training, and retesting until the subject matter is mastered. The program was designed by Andrew based on his experience as the CFO of numerous hospices and the insight gained from working with literally hundreds of hospices. The program is an intense 2 1/2 days in duration. Participants are removed from their respective environments by coming to Hendersonville or an alternative site. Absolute FOCUS is given to the subject matter that is critical to being an effective CFO. A single comprehensive test is given. Once a question of the exam is successfully completed, it is no longer necessary to be retested on the question on days 2 or 3. It is desired that all participants pass all sections and successfully answer every question.

This program will also be held November 10-12, 2014.

Learning Objectives:
  • The Mindset of an Effective CFO
  • The Measures and Metrics of Hospice Operations
  • What are Good Numbers
  • Scenario Analysis
  • Best Practices
  • About MVI tools

The difficulty of the program is relative to the talents, preparation, and skills of the individual. Successful participants should feel EMPOWERED and CONFIDENT in what they KNOW. This is a difficult program and upon completion, participants should have a great sense of achievement. Andrew will conduct the program. The cost of the 2 1/2-day program is $2,000 per participant ($600 for repeat attendees). CEOs are also welcome. Participants will be tested on computer skills on-line before or after the program.

There is no topic that is more important! For hospices that have experienced the Model Workshop since mid-2011, you have already been exposed on a knee-deep level to this fundamental shift in the Model as the topic of People Development is the #1 topic and the one that receives the most attention. Why?

It is a complete fantasy to think that an organization can become extraordinary without devoting incredible intention towards developing its people. People Development should be the center of your hospice universe as THE MISSION CAN ONLY BE ACCOMPLISHED THROUGH PEOPLE.

Now you may think, “What could be innovative in the world of teaching and learning? We already have an ongoing educational program.” This may be true, but is your People Development process extraordinary? Can you fully train a nurse in 28 days or other disciplines within radically short periods of time? How does your hospice ensure that your proprietary care experience happens for every patient, every time? Do all clinical staff document extraordinarily well at the bedside? How can policies and procedures be recalled at will or within milliseconds? How do you get a best known practice (BKP) operationalized in 2 weeks for 500 clinical staff members?

Learning and teaching have always been important in the MVI world. I thought we were pretty fair at it. Now, after preparing for this program for the last year and half, I see more clearly why certain things worked as well as the VAST areas that need improvement. It is dangerous to assume that teachers, clinicians or people in general know how to teach well. In this program, we will EXPERIENCE learning based on the best known practices in hospice as well as from what we understand from some of the top educators in the world.

Come ready to teach your Model Visit! This basic widget of hospice will be the subject that we will use to teach methods and practices as well as phone interactions. If your hospice hasn’t created a visit structure, make one up and use it for the purpose of this program!

In all my years, I have seen few clinical managers receive the training needed to be effective on the BUSINESS side of hospice. This is a lost opportunity as these managers have dramatic power over costs, perhaps more than any other position. In my career, I have referred to the ones that have mastered the business side... these special clinical leaders... as “Golden” as they successfully balance the ideas of profit and purpose.  This program will be a “shock” to many participants, but that is exactly what is needed. If our hospices aren’t absolutely thriving economically with the current great Medicare reimbursement, something is wrong... and the Clinical Leader plays a HUGE role. ~Andrew

The Clinical Leader Program is an intense 2.5 day training experience designed to instill the mindset and technical competencies into motivated individuals that want to be Top Hospice Clinical Leaders as well as leaders that support the clinical function. This program is a crash course about the BUSINESS of hospice.

The Clinical Leader holds the purse strings perhaps more than any other position in a hospice. As much as 60-70% of a hospice's costs are under the direct influence of the Clinical Leader when one considers that this position is in charge of Direct Labor and Patient-Related areas. Yet, often the Clinical Leader receives little training regarding the business of hospice. Therefore, this program will impart practical knowledge needed to be or understand a Top Hospice Clinical Leader that is able to balance purpose and financial realities. Participants will have 6 opportunities to pass the 250 question exam that includes hospice scenarios and metrics knowledge. This program is a great supplement to The Model™ Workshop (before or after) to impact culture rapidly.

Learning Objectives:
  • Explain the importance of using an economic model
  • Identify key measurements & metrics
  • Distinguish between mediocre and world class performance
  • Describe key attributes of great leadership

The Profitability Program is MVI’s CEO Program. This program is not about showing you how to be a CEO, rather it is about profitability!

This program eradicates any flawed paradigms and provides a deliberate concentration of the practices of the most profitable hospices. Profitability is essential to organizational sustainability and capacity. When a CEO is hired, it is assumed that he or she knows how to run a successful business in terms of effectiveness and profitability. With FPs hospices, this is normally understood. With NFP organizations, this might not be explicitly expressed. However, any CEO will be displaced if financial losses threaten the organization. Many hospice leaders and Boards of Directors are confused about the idea of profitability. Leaders need to have a deep-rooted certainty about the absolute NEED for profits and proportionally large financial reserves.

This is a completely new 2-day program designed to create a clear roadmap of what is specifically needed to move into the neighborhood of hospice financial outliers. Profitability is MVI’s core competence and it is a topic we teach well.

Learning Objectives:
  • How to convincingly explain why profitability is needed and is right.
  • To identify key measurements/metrics and distinguish between mediocre and world class performance.
  • The specific actions that are required to move a hospice into the 90th percentile regarding profitability.
